Pros

  • Reversable match display
  • Good entering-level functioning
  • Better than average keyboard

Our Verdict

Scorn the low price, the E45W's build superior holds its own against laptops and 2-in-1 machines costing several one C dollars more. Its Winchester drive is slow, but overall performance is fine once Windows is fully pie-eyed.

For $500 MSRP (and as low as $350 connected sale), the E45W-C4200X is much of laptop. Not many similarly priced products offer a fully reversible 14-inch touchscreen display—as a question of fact, I tail't think of cardinal.

It's echt the E45W-C4200X's display is "only" 1366×768, but to a lot of the great unwashe that won't matter. Yes, 1080p video won't look as sharp, just granted the price and features, it's pretty unhurried to overlook that.

Configuration and performance

Our test E45W-C4200X featured a Core i3-5015U CPU, 6GB of DDR3/1600 memory, and a 500GB 5400rpm HGST hard disc drive. That storage disk isn't sudden, examination at a tortoise-like 60MBps, just its performance is symptomless inside the awaited range for a record-based drive running game at that speed. You also get 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, along with two USB 3.0 typecast A ports, full-size HDMI production, and an SD notice slot. In that location's no ethernet jack, however. You'll need to comport a USB-to-ethernet arranger for a hardwire connection.

The E45W scores of 2,498 in PCMark 8's Study Stereotypical and 2,007 in Creative Conventional were a tad misleading. On paper, those tons indicate moderately paced performance in office and several content creation tasks, but in practice, I experienced marked wait times when opening programs and booting the machine.

That's largely because of the aforementioned slothful hard drive. Upgrading the E45W with an SSD should supply substantial improvement in carrying into action, but IT'll take on a little more travail than with unusual laptops. You'll have to remove 10 screws along the hinder, then utilise a spudger along the seam. (You'll get at the right rear edge of the seam between the keyboard deck and the support cover.) The work on is worth it, though: The barrage, hard drive, and memory are in plain view erst you get the back cover murder. Just recall that performing such an rising slope typically voids your warranty.

Getting approach to the laptop's components takes a bit of work, but it's not difficult.

During our rundown test of the E45W's stamp battery, in which we play a 4K Extremist HD movie file victimization Windows 10's native picture player, this 2-in-1 machine lasted for 6 hours and 20 transactions. You can't compare that directly with most of our other laptop reviews, however, as the E45W's display hits a upper limit smartness of only 205 nits. We typically trial at 250 nits unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Note that with a screen that first-rate extinct at 205 nits, the E45W may possess more of an issue with shining sun than unusual laptops that tooshie fight back with some brightness of their possess. In our test locations, which use representative colourful lighting, the screen was gradual to view.

Toshiba does load a fair amount of "value-added" software on the E45W, similar Wild Tangent Games, SocialSafe, Insteon, and more. In that location are also the usual Toshiba utilities and McAfee antivirus software. In my opinion, system carrying out enlivened rather a bit after I removed the legal age of it.

Design and Styling

Performance is all well and good, just that's not the entirety of a laptop's experience. For the most part, the E45W's non-computer hardware attributes can be incomparable summed up as "very acceptable," particularly given that $500 price tag along.

The E45W's dimensions are 13.3 x 9.3 x 0.85 inches, and it weighs in at a rather hefty 5 pounds, just it'd be unrealistic to expect a thin-and-light machine for this cheap. That said, I never had the feeling I was dragging roughly combined of the anchors we had to endure a couple of decades ago.

As for looks, I'm achromatic more or less our E45W review unit's appearance. Our look back unit of measurement was oxford grey with a slate texture and a pewter-gold-colored keyboard deck—low-key, without doubt. (Of row, knockout is in the eye of the observer.)

The E45W-C4200X viewed from one of its amend angles.

I have stronger opinions about the keyboard and trackpad: I found typing happening the E45W's Chiclet-style keyboard pleasant sufficient, though the bounce was slower than ideal. The layout was spacious, and Toshiba has nicely branch the editing and navigation keys in their own column. I don't brain a non-standardised configuration when it's easy to learn and doesn't bear upon the main typing layout.

The touchpad is a one-piece, piano-flexible joint type with integrated buttons. As expectable, it's harder to press closer to the top, but overall, the tactile feedback it gives when clicked on is pleasantly solid. It seemed under-sensitive to tapping, though. Normally I have the opposite complaint and disable tapping for being too sensitive for my bumbling ways. Along the other hand, touch sensibility connected the ten-point display analog-to-digital converter was nigh on perfect.

e45w c4200x feature4 Toshiba

The E45W-C4200X's keyboard and touchpad are better than you'd expect in this price roam, though the latter can be a bit sensitive.

As a 2-in-1 style laptop, the E45W's fully reversible display allows you to use it like a tablet, if you so choose, as well as in a few other configurations so much as a bivouac-like modality. Off-axis viewing is good plenty for these different positions to work, even if not what you'd experience with an IPS panel.

Conclusion

A Toshiba laptop computer served A my travel workhorse for several years noncurrent in the day. I likable it, but haven't since used some other of the companion's machines. That wasn't for some particular reason—it was just the way things worked extinct. However, if the E45W-C4200X is whatever meter reading of what the caller is up to these days, I may have been missing out.
